• Are you just getting started in
smallholding and wondering how to look after
you pigs and poultry?
• Are you unsure just what is involved in
keeping pigs and poultry?
• Perhaps you have been going for a year or
two and beginning to realise that there are
problems, to which you have no answer as
yet?
• Maybe you are producing eggs and bacon,
but making a loss and wondering why?
This one day course is designed to answer
all those questions and will be targeting
newcomers to these enterprises, whether they
be totally inexperienced or have some
livestock already.
• Making a profit is vital to some but
unimportant to others. However the avoidance
of wasted cash is of interest to most of us.
• Animal Welfare is always of critical
importance to everyone.
• What buildings and equipment are required?
• Which rules and regulations apply?
• What do they eat?
• What about slaughtering and butchery?
• How can I market the produce?
You will return home with the answers to all
of the above, and with the confidence to set
about your project with enthusiasm.
The course is held at Foston in south
Derbyshire, DE65 5PX. Oak Lodge Nursery is a
remarkably well run Smallholding, owned by
Alan and Sarah, who have all the usual
animals and a few more unusual ones too, but
the emphasis is on Rare Breed pigs and
poultry.
Alan has spent a lifetime in pigs and
poultry and will be your instructor for most
of the day’s presentations.
They also have an excellent Farm Shop and a
Coffee Shop, through which they successfully
market much of their produce.
You will be working amongst the pigs and
poultry and in the farm building, which
doubles as a classroom on such occasions.
